I find it unbearably hard to drink enough water. It is good for the tykes and makes me feel better (I've been feeling a little queasy/off lately) but I just have a hard time doing it. I don't like sweet drinks and know I shouldn't be having caffeine, so what is a girl to do? I must have tried a million beverage combinations by now - juices, seltzer, fizzy, flat, you name it. And I lug it around everywhere! All to no avail. I was terrible about hydrating myself before I got pregnant and knew this was going to be an issue for me but convinced myself that when it was for the kid(s) I'd step up to the plate but I'm not. I always used to wake up with leg cramps when I was dehydrated and these pregnancy nighttime leg cramps take it to a whole new level. And of course all the books have me worried about increased chance of preterm labor.

How much water do you or did you drink while pregnant - and how do you make sure you drink enough of it?

I would fill up a gallon of water in the fridge each day and sip from it or pour from it into my smaller water bottle- that way I knew that I was at least drinking the required amount of water during pregnancy. And when I would get a moment to "sip" I would actually chug, so that I would take down a lot more at once. Hope this is helpful.

Oh, man... By the end, I was up to about a gallon and a half per day. I had my 32-oz Nalgene and made sure to fill it up and drain it 4-6 times per day. Mostly just straight water, though occasionally I'd throw in one of those little Crystal Light pouches.

I really did notice a huge difference when I was well-hydrated in terms of having fewer contractions and keeping the swelling at bay. Of course, the great irony is that, while dehydration can bring on more contractions, so too can a full bladder! So it would just be all day long... chug and pee, chug and pee. And in the last few weeks, there was nothing to be done about all the swelling, but I had to keep on drinking, anyways.

Of course, if you're planning on breastfeeding... that takes water to a new level entirely. The thirst is incredible.

My thoughts on the subject at about 28 weeks, and again at about 33 weeks...

Goddess in Progress is right - just wait until you are BF'ing and you will really know what hydration is! Once I weaned, I went through an anti-water period that still rears it's head every once in a while!

I always drink more/faster when I have a straw - easier to sip constantly without even noticing... It's my downfall with mixed drinks, but in this situation could be helpful!

I do drink a lot of water (all the time, not just when I was pregnant or breastfeeding) and I find the easiest way to drown yourself is to buy the Poland Spring bottles with the sport cap (a squeeze top). They're giant anyway, and if you really squeeze the water out, you drink way more! I know it's strange... but it works!

I agree with the suggestion for a straw. Have you tried the flavored seltzers? I love those. Also, with plain water, experiment with the temperature. I don't like water ice cold or even just cold from the fridge. I like it room temperature. Also, what about herbal teas (non-caffeinated of course)? Red raspberry leaf tea (not "rasberry zinger" or raspberry flavored tea) is excellent for pregnant women. But any of the caffeine free Celestial Seasonings teas would do.
