Dammit, Those Christmas Shoes!

Today I had Oldies 103.3 on in the car - a station that plays all Christmas music after Thanksgiving (Husband prefers our Barenaked Ladies and Rat Pack Christmas CDs but he has those in his car and I've been too lazy to burn them).

What comes on the radio but "Christmas Shoes" by Bob Carlisle.  It reminded me that when discussing must-see movies last week we did not discuss the cheesey movies that air on Lifetime and Hallmark channel during the holiday season - although I appreciate the sentiment that Die Hard is the best Christmas movie.  Last December I billed 80 hours at my Big Firm.  The whole month.  I think it was the reason I got pregnant after 22 months of trying.  I DVRed crappy Christmas movies and drank a bottle of wine.  Each night.  God, that makes me really, really hate how little sleep I'm getting right now - I'm like a walking zombie.

Anyway, back to the point of this post:  One movie that made for my viewing pleasure was "Christmas Shoes" starring Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams.  It basically took the lyrics of Christmas Shoes and turned it into a movie.  A movie that made me cry and I only saw the last 30 mins of it.  I thought - wait, they made a movie out of some crappy, cheesey lyrics?  Yup.

So at first I laughed when I started listening to "Christmas Shoes" remembering how lame the song and movie are.  Then I got teary-eyed listening to the lyrics.  I mean, a kid who buys special shoes for his mom dying of cancer on Christmas Eve?  Damn you, Christmas Shoes!

Side Note: What is with country music trying to make you cry?  Other songs that got non-country airtime are "Butterfly Kisses" (although that one made me want to retch. Shit. Just realized that is Bob Carlisle too - what is with that guy? There is even a book!) and "Live Like You Were Dying".

Yeah, they definitely started shortly after Halloween! Remember how they used to get rid of their DJs for the entire month of December? I guess they stopped doing that.

I've been enjoying 105.7. Also all Christmas, all the time. That said, I'm not sure how many more times I can hear Jingle Bell Rock without screaming. I'm singing "giddyup jingle horse, kick up your feet" in my sleep.

I know that song well (as I have been listening to 103.3 and 105.7 since they went all Christmas all the time). I personally hate that song. How depressing! I also hate the Italian Christmas Donkey song. I've asked my mom, who is Italian, if she'd ever heard of such a thing. She had no idea. I'd love it if they took those off the playing list. They have added a new one this year -- The 12 Days of Christmas sung by Straight No Chaser. I LOVE that one. You can see them live at: http://www.oldies1033.com/pages/3299827.php?

Hi! My hubby took me down to Mohegan Sun to see Tim McGraw on the 5th. Live Like You Were Dying was awesome live. My hubby's not a big Tim McGraw fine, but he likes that one.

I TOTALLY agree with Neve's Mommy -- the Christmas Donkey song sucks. Damn it; now I'm going to have the stupid "hee haw hee haw" in my head!!!

Personally, I can't stand "Jingle Bell Rock" and feel it is the most overrated Christmas song out there. "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" is right behind it in being overplayed and slightly annoying. "Parson Brown" ??? WTF. I tend to lean more towards the traditional classics like Little Drummer Boy and Oh Holy Night (and South Park's Swiss Colony Beef Log). Anyone else feel some Christmas songs are overplayed and don't deserve to be the "seasonal hits" that they are?

I agree with the ladies, the Dominic the Donkey song is awful and is about the only Christmas song that I hate. Sorry Jordan, Jingle Bell is probably my all time favorite! In fact, I'm inspired to write a whole blog about all the stupid Christmas songs that I love, so come on over to my 90210 site and check it out!
